What do new U.S. tariffs on washing machines mean for HPN Select members?

On Tuesday, January 23, 2018, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order levying new import tariffs on washing machines, washing machine parts, and solar panels. The administration announced that for each of the first two years, it will impose a 20% tariff on the first 1.2 million imported large residential washing machines, while there will be a 50% tariff on machines above that number. This will drop to 16% and 40% respectively in the third and following years. There will also be a 50% tariff on washing machine parts.

So what does this mean for HPN Select, and their vendor partner, Whirlpool? Goldman Sachs forecasts an 8% to 20% increase in the price of a new washing machine from international suppliers such as Samsung and LG (LG announced on Wednesday that they will be raising prices on all washing machines by roughly $50).

But for customers of Whirlpool, who manufacture all washing machines in the U.S., there is likely to be minimal to no effect on pricing. HPN Select members should be wary of purchasing appliaces outside of the HPN Select contract with Whirlpool. Other partners such as HD Supply and Wilmar carry appliances made by companies such as Frigidaire, who manufacture their washing machines in Juarez, Mexico, and Electrolux, who do much of their manufacturing in Europe, and as a result may see rising prices.

The one caveat to this is if domestic manufacturers such as Whirlpool and GE source some parts for their machines overseas, there is the possibility that costs for their machines could also slightly rise, just not as dramatically as their overseas competitors. HPN Select is currently working on collecting further information from Whirlpool about any sourcing of overseas parts.

5 Reasons To Start Thinking About Pest Control In The Winter

Think you don’t need pest control in the winter? Think again! Winter pest services can be the most valuable for the following reasons:

  1. Pests are most motivated to get into your home when the weather gets cold. Bugs and wildlife, like disease-harboring skunks, raccoons, and bats, take shelter inside warm buildings, and often end up in attics or basements.
  2. Food sources are harder to find in the winter, so most pests go into a stage of low energy. But heat or the smell of food may lure them out into living or working spaces, often catching residents by surprise.
  3. Piles of leaves on your properties are warm, moist harborages for a slew of pests, including bed bugs, making it more likely that you will experience an infestation problem. Bed bugs feast on the blood of resting people, and can find their way into your property through clothing, and luggage. They are tiny, and difficult to spot, but cause a lot of damage.
  4. Rodents, like rats, mice, and tree squirrels, do not hibernate in winter. When they get cold and hungry, suddenly your property may look very appealing to them. They can cause damage to structures, carry disease pathogens, and can even chew through equipment and electrical wiring.
  5. Other pests like termites and pharaoh ants are equally active through winters, gnawing their way through structures, surprising unsuspecting residents with serious damage once the warm weather hits.

No property manager wants to deal with any of these nightmare scenarios. When product and service procurement specialists at HPN Select were looking for ways to help their property management members fight of pests no matter the season, they chose the experts at Rentokil. Working with procurement specialists like Select will not only save you money, but also the hassle of finding efficient, customized, and certified pest control services.
